Even deep-straw bedding

Uneven deep-straw bedding

Deep-straw bedding

Even area

• Description of the floor

On the concrete floor there is a layer of straw. Depending on how often the stable gets cleaned, the straw layer is thicker or thinner. It is very comfortable for the cows because it is very soft and the cows are more able to follow their natural behaviour.

• Cleaning

This floor can be cleaned with a tractor. Mostly the farmers clean it only once a year or when they layer gets too thick.
Normally they just put fresh straw in it nearly every day to keep the stable and the cows clean.
There is a also a new invention coming- the manure robot, but  its development is not yet completed.

Uneven area

• Description of the floor

This system is similar to the first kind of deep straw bedding but the concrete floor under the straw isn’t even. New straw is put on the highest points of the floor. The dirty straw gets down to the lowest part of the floor due to the walking of the cows.  A manure scrubber takes the manure out of the stable.

• Farmers' quotations and opinions

It is a very good system, because it allows a lot of natural behaviour. The comfort for cows is better in this system than in stables with laying boxes too.
Another reason to choose this system is that you get tight manure and it is the cheapest way to build a stable.
