Norway
In Norway it’s just 3%of the total area that’s grass or arable land. We also have a long winter. So we have a short growing season. We feed mostly with silage from round balls or silos, some hay and straw, minerals and concentrate.
The most common breed is the Norwegian red, which is a mix of all the traditional breeds.
There are not so many cows per farm, in average 16,7cows per farm. But there are farms with 80 cows and farms with 5 cows per a farm. Totally there are 241 664 dairy cows distributed on 14 475 herds.
The average dairy cow in Norway milked 6541kg milk in 2005. The average fat percentage was 4,20%, the average protein percentage was 3,33% and the average lactose percentage was 4,70%.
In summer many farmers keep cows on mountain pastures, from the beginning of July till the end of August.
