Hay is used to get structure in the food. If there is more structure in it. A farmer told us: “It’s good for young cattle how begins with eating”. The stomach will begin with working. The cow will produce more saliva and the pH in the rumen will get more alkaline. So the micro organisms could work better. If there is not enough structure in the roughage, the cow could get rumen acidosis. The farmer also just it to make the food slower. So the cow can get more out of the food.
