Situation in our countries
Ventilation in Austria:
Austrians do not usually use machines in air-condition. The most common ventilation systems are the windows and doors. They also use curtains which they can move up and down depending of the weather. It also protects animals from the wind. They don’t have to build expensive heating systems, because the winter is not so cold and long and the cows can tolerate cold weather as long as they have shelter against the wind.
Ventilation in Finland:
The normal ventilation system used in a stable in Finland is the air valves which keeps it warm and ventilated. The farmers can control this system very easily. There are few ventilators in the roof which are sucking the bad air off. The ventilators could be in the manure pit so they can suck the ammonium away. Usually the roof is pretty low because it reduces the heating costs. In winter time most of the stables have problems with fresh air, so the system is not perfect.
Ventilation in the Netherlands:
There are big differences in ventilation in the Netherlands between old and new barns. In new barns, it is common to have an open top, an isolated roof, curtains at the sides and everything is managed by an automatic climate control system. In old barns there are many problems with ventilation, because there are often only doors and windows. So dutch farmers looked for solutions and we saw really good and cheep solutions, but you can read more about this under "Problems and solutions"
